Udaya · उदय a sunrise practice प्रातःकालीन अभ्यास

Morning Yoga Flow

Six guided phases, sequenced the way your body actually responds: joints first, heat next, strength before flexibility, breath once you're ready, stillness last.

Why Alcohol & Yoga Don't Mix ·

Dehydration: alcohol is a diuretic — it dehydrates the body right when asana and pranayama both depend on well-hydrated, pliable muscles and a clear breath.

Balance & coordination: it slows reaction time and impairs balance — a real risk in standing poses and inversions especially.

Sleep & readiness: alcohol fragments sleep, so a body practicing the next morning is already short on the rest a sunrise practice assumes.

Mental clarity: yogic tradition describes alcohol as tamasic — dulling and clouding — the opposite of the alert, steady awareness this whole practice is meant to cultivate.

Government of India: the Ministry of AYUSH's Common Yoga Protocol lists Śauca (purity of body, surroundings, and mind) and Yuktāhāra (appropriate, moderate diet and lifestyle) among the foundational prerequisites for practice. Separately, peer-reviewed research conducted under India's Ayushman Bharat wellness programme — the S-VYASA-led Niyantrita Madhumeha Bharata study, covering over 30,000 participants nationwide — documents alcohol as a major risk factor that the country's yoga-based public health initiatives are specifically designed to help address.

Vedic reference: the Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa (VI.1.3.10), part of the Vedic corpus attached to the Yajurveda, explicitly distinguishes Soma — associated with truth (satya) and light (jyotiṣ) — from Sura, or alcohol — associated with untruth (anṛta) and darkness (tamas) — stating that it weakens a person physically, morally, and intellectually. This is among the earliest textual roots of the sattvic/tamasic framework still used in yogic and Ayurvedic thought today.

Rule of thumb: leave at least 12–24 hours (ideally more) between alcohol and practice, and never practice while still feeling its effects.

Why Yog Discourages Over-Commitment ·

The Yog texts keep returning to steadiness over load. Five pointers, each tied to a text. They are a reading of the verses: none of them uses the word “over-commitment”.

1. Balance, not excess (Gita 6.16–17): Yog is not for one who eats or sleeps too much or too little. For one who is balanced (yukta) in food, recreation, effort and rest, it ends sorrow. Taking on more than you can sustain breaks that balance.१.

2. Effort, not outcome (Gita 2.47–48): You have a right to action alone, never to its fruits, and yoga is samatvam, evenness of mind. Promising a result you do not control is a claim on the fruit, and the strain of keeping that promise is what yoga is meant to loosen.२.

3. Your own role (Gita 3.35): One’s own svadharma, even imperfectly done, is better than another’s done well; another’s path brings fear (para-dharmo bhayāvahaḥ). Taking on roles that are not yours invites strain.३.

4. Contentment (Yoga Sutra 2.42): Santoṣād anuttamaḥ sukha-lābhaḥ: from contentment comes unsurpassed happiness. Much over-commitment grows out of wanting more, and Patanjali places the highest happiness in contentment with what is.४.

5. Excess listed as an obstacle (Shiva Samhita 3.33, Vasu translation; numbering differs by edition): Among the things the yogi should give up, the text lists much walking, much talking, untruth and much eating: excess in effort, speech and appetite.५.

Verse numbers follow commonly used editions; the Shiva Samhita’s numbering differs between editions.
