Yog for Fast Sleep & Easy Morning

A gentle wind-down sequence to fall asleep faster tonight, and support an easier, more regular morning tomorrow.

Part One

Why These Two Goals Go Together

Falling asleep quickly and having an easy morning both depend on the same shift: moving the nervous system from an alert, "doing" state into a calm, "resting and digesting" state. Gentle forward folds, hip and belly work, and slow, longer exhales all encourage this shift — which is why a short sequence before bed can support both goals at once, rather than needing two separate routines.

Part Two

The Sequence

Do this on your mat or straight on the bed, in comfortable clothes, lights already dimmed. About 20 minutes, start to finish.

  1. Vajrasana 3–5 min

Kneel and sit back on your heels, spine tall — right after dinner if you can. It's the one seated pose that's fine on a full stomach, and it gently supports digestion by easing blood flow to the gut.

  2. Supta Pavanamuktasana 1 min each side

Lying on your back, hug one knee to your chest, then switch sides. This presses gently on the colon, helping release trapped gas and preparing the bowel for the morning.

  3. Supine Spinal Twist 1 min each side

Knees bent, drop them together to one side, shoulders flat on the mat. This gently wrings the abdominal organs — one of the more dependable asana-based nudges toward regular elimination.

  4. Balasana 2–3 min

Knees wide or together, forehead down, arms relaxed. The gentle pressure on the belly combined with a forward fold calms the mind and eases you toward sleep.

  5. Viparita Karani 5 min

Hips close to a wall, legs resting up it, arms open. One of the most reliable poses for winding down — it shifts the body into rest-and-digest mode, the same state both sleep and digestion depend on.

  6. Shavasana + slow breath 3–5 min

Lie flat, eyes closed. Breathe in for a count of 4, out for a count of 6 — the longer exhale is what actually triggers the body's relaxation response. Let this be the last thing you do before the light goes off.

Total time: about 20 minutes. Even doing just the last three poses on a rushed night still helps.
Part Three

Beyond Asana — What Actually Helps Mornings

Asana supports both goals, but honestly, it's a supporting factor — not the main lever. These three habits usually matter more for a genuinely easy morning:

Finish dinner early

Eating 2–3 hours before bed, and keeping dinner on the lighter side, gives digestion a head start before you lie down.

Warm water on waking

A full glass of warm water first thing in the morning, before tea or coffee, is one of the simplest and most consistently recommended nudges toward regularity.

Don't rush the first visit

Give your body a settled, unhurried few minutes in the morning rather than rushing straight into the day — the urge often needs a little patience.

Keep a consistent bedtime

A steady sleep-wake schedule supports the body's natural digestive rhythm as much as it supports sleep quality itself.
