Sharadiya Navaratri & Yog

Nine nights, nine gates of the body city, and one steady practice.

What the Atharvaveda, Gita, Upanishads, Ramayana, Yoga Sutras and Shiva Samhita say about the body as a city of nine gates, the season, Shakti and the inner victory, and a nine-night practice built on them.

The honest answer on “original references”

Navaratri as a Goddess festival is described in Puranic, smarta and tantric works: the Devi Mahatmya, and the Devi Bhagavata Purana, which tells how Sri Ram worshipped the Goddess for nine days in Ashvina. That story is not in Valmiki’s Ramayana. None of those are on your list, and I found no nine-night Navaratri in the Vedas, Gita, Valmiki Ramayana, Upanishads, Yoga Sutras or Shiva Samhita. So I will not pretend otherwise. What your texts do contain is the yogic ground the festival stands on: the body as a city of nine gates (Atharvaveda, Gita, Upanishads), Shakti, the autumn season, and the inner victory. This page gathers those, and builds a nine-night practice on the nine gates.

Method note: for the claim that Vedic literature has no goddess Navaratri, I relied on one scholarly study of the festival’s sources (Oxford Research Archive), which finds only an Ashvina military calendar in Vedic-derived texts and Puranic, smarta and tantric works for the Navaratri itself.

Atharvaveda 10.2.31

The city of the gods, Ayodhya (the unconquerable), has eight wheels and nine gates. In it is a golden treasury, heaven, wrapped in light.[1]

The page I read treats the city as the human body.

Bhagavad Gita 5.13

The self-controlled embodied being, having mentally renounced all actions, sits at ease in the city of nine gates, neither acting nor causing action.[2]

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 3.18

In the city of nine gates the embodied one, the swan, moves outward, master of the whole world, moving and unmoving.[3]

Connection to yog: the nine gates are the doors through which energy leaves and the world enters. Yoga Sutra 2.54 describes pratyahara, the senses withdrawing from their objects and following the mind.[5] Guarding the nine gates is therefore a plain description of the practice. Nine nights, nine gates: that is the reading this page offers, as my own arrangement.

The season

Sharad: the season to resume the workशरद: कर्म पुनः आरंभ करने की ऋतु

In 2026, panchang listings give Sharadiya Navaratri as starting on Sunday 11 October (Ashvina Shukla Pratipada), Mahanavami on 19 October and Vijayadashami on 20 October. These dates are not from the texts; confirm with your local panchang.

Rigveda 7.66.16

“May we see a hundred autumns, may we live a hundred autumns.” Sharad is the autumn and, by extension, the year.[6]

Valmiki Ramayana, Kishkindha Kanda 30 (vv. 60–61)

After the rains Sri Ram sees clear skies and calm rivers. He says autumn is when kings begin their campaigns, and is troubled that Sugriva, lost in pleasure, has not begun.[9]

Connection to yog: clear sky after the rains is a natural moment to restart a practice that slipped.

Shakti

Passages from your texts, not a claim that they describe Navaratri.

Rigveda 10.125 · Devi Sukta

Vak speaks as a sovereign power, “the queen, gatherer of treasures”; through her one sees, breathes and hears.[7]

Sanskrit first line not separately checked; the hymn itself was checked.

Rigveda 10.127 · Ratri Sukta

Eight verses to Night: she looks over every place with bright eyes, stars keep earth and sky lit, and she gives way to her sister Dawn.[8]

Kena Upanishad 3.12 – 4.1

Uma Haimavati, radiant, tells Indra the mysterious being was Brahman; the gods’ greatness was Brahman’s victory.[10]

Shiva Samhita 4.21

“When the sleeping Kundalini awakens through the grace of the guru, all the lotuses and knots are pierced.” The text is addressed by Shiva to Parvati.[11]

Care: the Devi Upanishad (Devi Atharvashirsha) is attached to the Atharvaveda, but a reference article places its composition in the medieval period. I did not open it and use it only as a pointer.

The victory

Vijayadashami and the war withinविजयदशमी और भीतर का युद्ध

Gita 16.1–3 was checked; Gita 3.43 and 16.21 were also checked.

Valmiki Ramayana, Yuddha Kanda 107

Sri Ram stands weary and thoughtful on the battlefield with Ravana ready before him. The sage Agastya arrives with the gods and speaks to him; tradition places the Aditya Hridayam teaching here. I opened only the first verses.[9]

Bhagavad Gita 16.1–3

The divine qualities: fearlessness, purity of mind, steadiness in knowledge, charity, self-control, sacrifice, study, austerity, straightforwardness; non-violence, truthfulness, freedom from anger, renunciation, peace, no fault-finding, compassion, no greed, gentleness, modesty, steadiness; vigour, forgiveness, fortitude, cleanliness, no enmity, no vanity.[2]

Gita 3.43 and 16.21

“Slay the enemy in the form of desire.” Three gates of ruin: desire, anger, greed.[2]

Checked against an online edition.

Connection to yog: the victory these texts point to is over desire, anger and greed, and the nine gates are where they enter.

Fasting

Fasting and the middle path

Gita 6.16–17 and 17.5–6 checked against an online edition.

Bhagavad Gita 6.16–17

Yoga is not for one who eats too much or not at all, sleeps too much or stays always awake. For one moderate in food, recreation, effort and rest, yoga destroys sorrow.[2]

Gita 17.5–6

Those who practise harsh austerity out of vanity and desire torment the body and the one within it.[2]

Take-away: if you fast, keep it light and sustainable. Skip fasting, or ask a doctor first, if you are pregnant, diabetic, have a stomach condition, take medicines or are unwell.

Nine nights, nine gates

A nine-night practice: guard the gates

My own arrangement, built on the nine-gated city (above) and Yoga Sutra 2.54. Keep the Udaya sequence as the daily base. Sutra and Gita numbers here were checked against online editions; the practice plan itself is my own arrangement.

  1. Night 1 ·

The eyes: choose what you look at

Yoga Sutra 2.54: withdraw the senses from their objects.[5] Begin with sight.

Try: Keep screens off for one hour; look at the sky for five minutes (the autumn sky of Kishkindha 30).

  2. Night 2 ·

The ears: listen to the night

The Ratri Sukta pictures night as watchful and calm.[8]

Try: Sit ten minutes in the evening with the phone away, listening.

  3. Night 3 ·

    The nostrils: breath

Yoga Sutra 2.49 defines pranayama as regulating inhalation and exhalation.

Try: Udaya’s pranayam phase, gentle ratios. No breath holds with heart or blood-pressure conditions.

  4. Night 4 ·

    The mouth: food

    Gita 6.16–17: moderation in food.[2]

Try: Eat simply and stop before full. Fast only if you are well and it is light.

  5. Night 5 ·

    The mouth: speech

Gita 17.15 calls speech that causes no distress, true, kind and helpful an austerity of speech.

Try: Speak only what is true and kind today; pause before replying.

  6. Night 6 ·

The lower gates: cleanliness and restraint

Yoga Sutra 2.32 lists cleanliness; 2.38 links continence to vitality. The Shiva Samhita’s Kundalini verses sit at this root (4.21).[11]

Try: Mula bandha awareness (gentle), and a clean, orderly space. Avoid straining.

  7. Night 7 ·

The lord of the city: dharana

Yoga Sutra 3.1: dharana binds the mind to one place. The gates are guarded; now gather the mind.

Try: Hold attention on the breath at the nostrils for five minutes.

  8. Night 8 ·

    Dhyana: unbroken flow

Yoga Sutra 3.2: unbroken flow of attention toward that one object.

Try: Sit ten minutes after practice and return gently each time attention drifts.

  9. Night 9 ·

    The golden treasury

Atharvaveda 10.2.31: within the city is a golden treasury wrapped in light.[1] Gita 5.13: the one who has mentally renounced action rests in the city at ease.[2]

Try: Full Udaya sequence, then a longer sit. End with thanks. On Vijayadashami make a sankalpa for the year (see Yog for Achieving Your Goal).
