Morning Practice FAQ

The questions that come up most about the 40-minute flow — answered with real references where a real reference exists, and honestly flagged as convention where it's convention.

Pranayama, Eyes & Closing

+Should my eyes stay closed through all of Pranayama and the Om chant?
Textual reference

Yes — and it's not a new rule, it's Pratyahara doing what it's meant to do. Patanjali's Yoga Sutra 2.54 defines Pratyahara (sense-withdrawal, the fifth limb) as the senses following the mind inward rather than reaching back out. Running Kapalbhati, Anulom Vilom, Bhramari, and Om as one unbroken, eyes-closed block lets that withdrawal continue instead of resetting four separate times.

Bhramari has the most direct textual anchor of the four: the Hatha Yoga Pradipika and Gheranda Samhita both pair it with Shanmukhi Mudra — closing the eyes, and often the ears — so the hum is heard from the inside, not watched from outside. Om, as meditated on in the Mandukya Upanishad, has likewise always been an inward object of contemplation.

+Why rub the palms warm before opening the eyes?
Convention, honestly labeled

This specific gesture doesn't trace to one named verse the way Bhramari's Shanmukhi Mudra does. It's a widely taught closing convention across many Hatha yoga and meditation lineages — consistent with the broader, well-established principle that Pratyahara should be exited gently rather than snapped out of. Worth doing; just not scripture-mandated the way the closed-eye instruction itself is.

+What if I feel dizzy or light-headed during Kapalbhati or the breath-holds?

Open your eyes and slow down — that's never a failure of the exercise. Rapid breathing and breath retention can occasionally cause light-headedness on their own, independent of whether your eyes are open. Having no visual anchor can make it feel more disorienting if it happens, which is exactly why opening your eyes at any point should always be stated as allowed, not treated as breaking an unbroken rule.

+What if keeping my eyes closed feels uncomfortable, not calming?

Then keep them open, or rest your gaze softly downward instead. Pratyahara is the goal, not eyelids specifically — for some people, especially anyone for whom closed eyes bring up anxiety, a soft, unfocused open gaze reaches the same inward attention without forcing something uncomfortable.

+How does this work in a group class, if no one can see the teacher?

The instructor's voice (or a bell) becomes the only shared reference once eyes are shut, so cueing needs to be spoken clearly rather than demonstrated. New practitioners often feel a flicker of timing-uncertainty in their first few sessions — that fades with repetition. What tends to deepen, session after session, is the shared stillness of the group moving through the same uninterrupted arc together.

Getting Started

+Do I need to be flexible before I start?

No. See What Kind of Yoga Should a Beginner Do? — Hatha and Yin are built for exactly this starting point, and every pose in this guide has a gentler variation.

+What if I don't have 40 minutes?

Every phase in the 40-Minute Flow also works as a standalone practice. Ten minutes of Surya Namaskar and Pranayama alone is a complete session, not a shortened one.

+Is there a right time of day to practice?

Morning is traditional and this guide is built around it, but the sequencing principles — warm-up before dynamic movement, a cool-down before pranayama — hold at any hour. See Dinacharya for the Working Yogi if mornings genuinely don't work for you.

+Can I skip the optional Headstand/Shoulderstand?

Yes, entirely — it's marked optional for a reason. It's listed as an add-on for those with prior training, never a required step in the sequence.

+Should Om be chanted aloud or silently?

Either is complete. Chanting aloud lets you feel the vibration in the chest and throat; a silent, mental repetition keeps the same inward focus without needing a quiet room. Neither is a lesser version of the other.

+Can I practice on ground that's uneven or wet with dew?

Not directly on it — but you don't need to skip practice, just adapt it. Dew is a real slip hazard for anything needing a firm footing or grip: Surya Namaskar's transitions, standing balance poses, and inversions especially. Uneven ground is a separate problem — a hidden slope quietly stresses an ankle or knee in ways you won't feel until later.

Always put a proper mat or thick folded cloth between you and dewy ground — that solves the wet problem outright. If the ground underneath is genuinely uneven, skip single-leg balance poses and inversions for that session; seated poses, gentle standing poses, and pranayama all remain fully available.

Other Practices, Honestly Placed

+Is laughing part of any Yog Marg or Yog style?

Not classically — laughter isn't in Patanjali's eight limbs or the four margs (Karma, Bhakti, Jnana, Raj). But it does have a real, named modern style: Laughter Yoga (Hasya Yoga), founded by Dr. Madan Kataria in Mumbai in 1995, combining voluntary laughter exercises with yogic breathing. A modest amount of research exists on its stress and mood effects — worth knowing about, not a dramatic clinical claim.

One loose, honest connection: in Bhakti traditions, spontaneous laughing or weeping during deep devotional absorption (bhava) in kirtan is genuinely documented — but that's laughter as a byproduct of devotion, not a technique anyone is instructed to perform.

+Is clapping with a Ram Ram chant part of any Yog Marg or style?

Yes — this one has a direct home in Bhakti Yoga. Rhythmic clapping (tali) alongside repeating a divine name is core to Kirtan, Bhajan, and Sankirtan, the congregational chanting tradition within Bhakti. Repeating "Ram Ram" is a classical form of Nama Japa — remembrance through the divine name — central to North Indian Vaishnava devotional life. The clapping isn't decorative; it's the tala (rhythm) that holds group chanting together.

It isn't a postural "style" the way Hatha or Vinyasa are — it doesn't involve asana at all — but it's a genuine, well-documented practice within the Bhakti marg specifically.

Origins & Texts, Honestly Sourced

+What does Maharshi Patanjali's writing on Yog say about hybrid asanas?

Nothing directly — the Yoga Sutras never mention hybrid asanas, and don't name a single asana at all. Asana gets only three sutras (2.46–2.48): steady and comfortable (sthira sukham), perfected by relaxing effort, after which the pairs of opposites — heat and cold, pleasure and pain — stop disturbing you. Patanjali gives a test, not a catalogue.

So a hybrid pose is fine on Patanjali's own terms if it passes that test: can you hold it steadily, without straining the breath, while relaxing effort within it? If not, the simpler version it's built from is the more classically grounded choice.

+Who invented Surya Namaskar, and when — is it a hybrid package?

Yes, genuinely a hybrid — of ancient devotion and a modern sequence. Sun veneration at sunrise is thousands of years old in Vedic tradition, but as verses and prostration, not a flowing 12-posture routine. The systematized exercise sequence practiced today is credited to Bhawanrao Shriniwasrao Pant Pratinidhi, the Raja of Aundh (1868–1951), who popularized and named it in his 1928 book — though he himself said it was already a common Marathi tradition, not something he invented from nothing.

At the time, it wasn't even considered yoga — it was taught as physical exercise, separate from asana practice. T. Krishnamacharya folded it into yoga teaching in Mysore in the 1930s, and his students Pattabhi Jois and B.K.S. Iyengar carried its flowing transitions into Vinyasa and Ashtanga Vinyasa styles worldwide.

+How many asanas does the Shiva Samhita describe?

The text states there are 84 asanas in total — but describes only 4 in real detail: Siddhasana, Padmasana, Ugrasana (Paschimottanasana), and Svastikasana. All four are seated, meditation-oriented postures, not a physical repertoire.

This "84, but only a few described" pattern isn't unique to the Shiva Samhita — the Hatha Yoga Pradipika mentions the same traditional figure of 84 while detailing around 15, and the Gheranda Samhita is the outlier that actually describes 32. The number 84 itself is best read as a traditional, symbolic total rather than a literal catalogue any one text delivers in full.
