The Patanjali Key

One text, read through four doors. Whether you lean toward Raj, Jnana, Bhakti, or Karma, the Yoga Sutras hold something for you — just not always with the same directness. This page says exactly how strong each connection actually is.

Where Every Seeker Starts, Regardless of Marg
Yoga Sutra 1.1
atha yogānuśāsanam
Now, the teaching of Yoga begins.
Yoga Sutra 1.2
yogaś citta-vṛtti-nirodhaḥ
Yoga is the stilling of the mind's fluctuations — the definition every marg is ultimately working toward, by its own route.
Yoga Sutra 2.29
yama-niyama-āsana-prāṇāyāma-pratyāhāra-dhāraṇā-dhyāna-samādhayo 'ṣṭāv aṅgāni
Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, Samadhi — the eight limbs, named in one breath.
रा

For the Raj Yog Seeker

Connection: direct — this text is your manual

Not a loose association: Swami Vivekananda titled his own commentary on these very sutras Raja Yoga. The eight limbs aren't related to your path — for a Raj seeker, they largely are it.

Yoga Sutra 1.12
abhyāsa-vairāgyābhyāṁ tan-nirodhaḥ
The mind is stilled through sustained practice and dispassion — the two pillars your entire path rests on.
Yoga Sutra 3.4
trayam ekatra saṁyamaḥ
Dharana, Dhyana, and Samadhi together, on one object, are called Samyama — the technical heart of the inner three limbs.

For the Jnana Yog Seeker

Connection: strong — a genuine textual thread

Patanjali spends real space on Viveka — discrimination between the seer (Purusha) and the seen (Prakriti) — which is exactly Jnana's method: knowing what you truly are by distinguishing it from what you are not.

Yoga Sutra 2.17
draṣṭṛ-dṛśyayoḥ saṁyogo heya-hetuḥ
The cause of what's to be overcome is the confusion of the seer with the seen — the whole problem, named in one line.
Yoga Sutra 2.25
tad-abhāvāt saṁyogābhāvo hānaṁ tad dṛśeḥ kaivalyam
When that confusion ends, the union ends — this is liberation, the seer resting in its own nature.
Yoga Sutra 4.34
puruṣārtha-śūnyānāṁ guṇānāṁ pratiprasavaḥ kaivalyaṁ
The text's final word: Kaivalya — the return of the gunas to their source, once they've served their purpose. Pure discernment, stated to the last line.
भ

For the Bhakti Yog Seeker

Connection: real, but one specific thread

Devotion isn't the text's main road, but it's genuinely present — named, not implied. Ishvara Pranidhana (surrender to the divine) appears as its own Niyama, and, remarkably, as a complete alternate path in its own right.

Yoga Sutra 1.23
īśvara-praṇidhānād vā
Or — through devotion and surrender to Ishvara. Offered as a complete method on its own, not a lesser substitute for the other seven limbs.
Yoga Sutra 2.45
samādhi-siddhir īśvara-praṇidhānāt
Samadhi itself is attained through surrender to Ishvara — the same goal Raj seekers reach by concentration, reached here by devotion.

For the Karma Yog Seeker

Connection: indirect — an honest exception

The most honest answer of the four: acting without attachment to results is the Bhagavad Gita's teaching, not primarily Patanjali's. What the Sutras genuinely offer a Karma seeker is the ethical scaffolding underneath any action in the world.

Yoga Sutra 2.1
tapaḥ-svādhyāya-īśvara-praṇidhānāni kriyā-yogaḥ
Discipline, self-study, and surrender to the divine, together, are called Kriya Yoga — literally, "the yoga of action."
Yoga Sutra 2.30
ahiṁsā-satya-asteya-brahmacarya-aparigrahā yamāḥ
Non-violence, truthfulness, non-stealing, restraint, non-grasping — the conduct any action in the world stands on, whoever is acting.

If Karma Yoga is genuinely your path, its own text deserves the credit here — the Yamas are a companion, not a substitute.

One Key, Four Locks

Patanjali never claimed to write four separate books. The same 195-odd sutras hand a Raj seeker a manual, a Jnana seeker a method of discernment, a Bhakti seeker a named door marked "or, through devotion" — and a Karma seeker the ethical ground every path needs, borrowed honestly rather than force-fit.

Sutra citations and translations are offered as general orientation, not a scholarly critical edition — Sanskrit source texts vary slightly in transliteration across editions. Connection strength is stated honestly rather than evenly, since the four margs are not equally represented in Patanjali's text.
