Mudras Every Body Can Practice

Ten hand mudras in two honest groups: five with a real, traceable classical source, and five practical ones from a more recent lineage — every one labeled for what it actually is, not blurred into false equivalence. Four more classical mudras follow, kept separate because they genuinely aren't beginner practices.

On "Authentic" and "Proven" — Read This First

Authentic here means textually traceable — to the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, the Gheranda Samhita, or a documented practice this old across both Hindu and Buddhist meditation traditions. It does not mean every traditional benefit attributed to a mudra has been clinically tested.

Proven is used narrowly and honestly: a few of these mudras are functionally provable — a folded finger genuinely closes a nostril, full stop — and a small amount of actual research exists on the breathing techniques some of them support. Where a claimed benefit is traditional rather than clinically established, this page says so directly instead of blurring the two together.

Part One

Classical Roots

Named and described in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, the Gheranda Samhita, or in use identically across Hindu and Buddhist tradition for over a thousand years.

Anjali Mudra

the offering seal
Classical — cross-tradition

How: palms pressed together at the chest, fingers pointing up, thumbs resting lightly against the sternum.

One of the oldest, most widely attested gestures in Indian tradition — a mark of reverence and centred attention used identically across Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain practice for millennia, still the universal greeting across the subcontinent today. Traditionally used to open and close a practice, gathering scattered attention into one still point before beginning.

Used in this app: opens and closes every round of Surya Namaskar, and in Tadasana & Vrikshasana.

Gyan Mudra

the seal of knowledge · also called Chin Mudra
Classical — Hatha textsLimited evidence

How: thumb tip and index fingertip touch lightly, the other three fingers extended, hands resting on the knees. Palms up is the more common meditation form; palms down is sometimes used as a grounding variant.

One of the most widely taught mudras across Hatha Yoga, held during seated pranayama and meditation. A small number of studies have looked at finger-position effects on brain activity and attention, with modest, inconsistent results — worth knowing about rather than citing as settled proof.

Used in this app: hands rest here through Kapalbhati and Dharana.

Vishnu Mudra

the nostril seal
Classical — Hatha Yoga PradipikaFunctionally provable

How: on the right hand, fold the index and middle fingers into the palm; keep the thumb, ring, and little fingers extended. The thumb closes the right nostril, the ring finger the left.

This is the one mudra on this page that needs no separate "proof" of benefit — it does exactly what it's built to do: physically alternate the breath between nostrils for Anulom Vilom (Nadi Shodhana). The genuine research sits with the breathing pattern itself, which has real published studies on autonomic and blood-pressure effects — the mudra is simply the mechanism that makes the technique possible.

Used in this app: right hand throughout Anulom Vilom; left hand rests in Gyan Mudra.

Shanmukhi Mudra

closing the six gates
Classical — Hatha Yoga Pradipika & Gheranda SamhitaFunctionally provable

How: eyes closed, thumbs gently seal the ear cartilage, index fingers rest on closed eyelids, middle fingers beside the nostrils, ring and little fingers above and below the lips.

Named and described in both major classical Hatha texts as a foundational technique for withdrawing all six sense-gates at once. Like Vishnu Mudra, its core function is literal rather than mystical — it mechanically reduces outside sensory input, which is exactly the physiological basis of Pratyahara.

Used in this app: the core practice of Bhramari and Pratyahara.

Dhyana Mudra

the meditation seal
Classical — cross-tradition

How: hands rest in the lap, one cupped inside the other (commonly right hand resting on left, palms up), thumb tips touching lightly to form an oval.

Alongside Anjali Mudra, this is one of the two most universally attested hand positions in meditation — used identically across Hindu and Buddhist traditions for well over a thousand years. Its "proof" is closer to the kind that applies to Anjali Mudra: not a clinical trial, but sustained, cross-cultural, unbroken use as the default resting hand position for stillness.

Used in this app: hands rest here through Dhyana — Anapanasati, Bhrumadhya Drishti, and Om Japa.
Part Two

Practical Mudras — A Different Lineage

These five are genuinely useful and widely taught, but honesty requires saying plainly: none trace to the Hatha Yoga Pradipika or Gheranda Samhita. Two have a real, traceable modern source; the rest are more loosely documented. Labeled accordingly, not blurred together.

Mushti Mudra

the fist gesture
Traditional — loosely documented

How: curl all four fingers into the palm, thumb resting over or gently tucked beside them, forming a simple closed fist. Rest on the knees or thighs.

Traditionally used briefly during certain pranayama variations, and commonly taught as a simple gesture for holding in warmth or settling restlessness — a general, low-key practice rather than one tied to a specific claim.

Precaution: if clenching causes cramping or strain, especially with arthritis, release and shake the hand out rather than holding through discomfort.

Merudanda Mudra

the spine gesture
Modern tradition

How: thumb, middle finger, and ring finger touch lightly at their tips; index and little fingers stay extended. Rest hands on the knees.

Commonly taught in newer mudra-therapy systems as a support for posture and nervous-system balance. This is a traditional claim passed down through that teaching lineage, not a clinically demonstrated one.

Precaution: nothing specific beyond the general rule — ease the fingertips together rather than pressing hard.
8 of 14

Adi Mudra

the primal gesture
Modern tradition — Bihar School of Yoga

How: tuck the thumb into the palm, at the base of the little finger, then gently curl the other four fingers over it into a loose fist. Rest palms-up on the thighs.

This one has a genuinely more traceable modern source: Swami Satyananda Saraswati's Bihar School of Yoga teaches Adi Mudra as a preparatory hand position for Yoga Nidra, said to support a settled, inward-turning nervous system. Still not clinical proof — but a clearer, more accountable lineage than most in this group.

Precaution: keep the fist loose, not clenched — this is meant to feel restful, not effortful.

Brahma Mudra

the creator's gesture
Modern tradition — Bihar School of Yoga

How: form Adi Mudra with both hands, then bring the two loose fists together and rest them lightly against the navel while breathing into the belly against them.

Also part of the Bihar School of Yoga's Yoga Nidra sequence, typically practised right after Adi Mudra, to draw awareness to the navel centre before the practice deepens.

Precaution: keep any pressure against the belly light. If pregnant, recently had abdominal surgery, or manage a hernia, skip the navel press and simply rest the hands in the lap instead.

Kanishthika Mudra

the little-finger gesture
Naming not standardized

How: the thumb tip touches the tip of the little finger, the other three fingers extended. Rest hands on the knees.

A naming caveat worth stating plainly: this exact hand shape is also widely taught elsewhere as Varun or Jal Mudra (the "water" gesture), and sources don't agree on whether "Kanishthika Mudra" names something distinct or is simply an alternate, descriptive name for the same shape. Traditionally associated with fluid balance in the body.

Precaution: nothing specific — the general rule applies: ease into the shape, don't force stiff fingers.
Part Three

Classical, But Not for Day One

These four are genuinely classical — named in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika or Gheranda Samhita, more textually documented than anything in Part Two. They're placed separately for a different reason: two of them carry real physical caution, and none should be learned from a page alone.

11 of 14

Shambhavi Mudra

the gaze turned inward
Classical — Hatha Yoga Pradipika

How: seated, gaze drawn gently upward and inward toward the space between the eyebrows, held softly without straining — a few breaths at first, never forced longer.

Described in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika's fourth chapter as a technique for drawing the mind inward quickly. It overlaps functionally with the Bhrumadhya Drishti already practiced in this app's Dhyana limb — this is its more formal, named version.

Precaution: keep the gaze soft, never strained. Avoid if you have glaucoma, a retinal condition, recent eye surgery, or migraine with visual aura — stop immediately if dizziness or eye strain appears.

Khechari Mudra (simplified)

the tongue seal
Classical — Hatha Yoga PradipikaAdvanced form: teacher required

Important first: the full classical form — the tongue folded back to enter the nasal cavity — is developed gradually over years under direct, hands-on guidance, and in its most literal traditional descriptions involves preparing the tongue's tissue. That form is not taught here, on a page, at all.

How (simplified, safe version): rest the tongue tip gently on the soft palate, or as far back on the roof of the mouth as is comfortable, without stretching. Hold during meditation or pranayama.

The classical text describes the full form; this simplified version is a widely taught modern accommodation, not itself found in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika — traditionally said to settle the mind and reduce distraction from swallowing during long meditation.

Precaution: never attempt tongue-stretching or any preparatory practice for the full classical form without a qualified, experienced teacher present in person. The simplified version should never cause pain or gagging — if it does, stop.

Yoni Mudra

the seal of the source
Classical — Gheranda Samhita

How: the same six-gate hand position as Shanmukhi Mudra — thumbs on the ears, index fingers on closed eyelids, middle fingers beside the nostrils, ring and little fingers above and below the lips — classically paired with held breath and inward attention.

An honest note: in the Gheranda Samhita this is largely the same gesture already covered as Shanmukhi Mudra, elaborated with breath retention and, in some lineages, visualization. It isn't a separate hand position so much as a deeper, more advanced application of one you've already practiced.

Precaution: because it's typically paired with breath retention, the same pranayama cautions apply — build capacity gradually, and avoid forceful holds with uncontrolled high blood pressure or during pregnancy.
14 of 14

Maha Mudra

the great seal
Classical — Hatha Yoga PradipikaFull form: teacher required

How: seated, one leg extended, the other heel pressed into the perineum. Fold forward over the extended leg while holding Jalandhara Bandha (chin lock) and Mula Bandha (root lock) through a breath retention, then release and repeat on the other side.

One of the more fully detailed mudra-bandha combinations in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika's third chapter, traditionally described as addressing a wide range of ailments and steadying the whole system. That breadth of traditional claim is exactly why it needs the most caution on this page.

Precaution: combines breath retention with two bandhas and a spinal fold. Not appropriate during pregnancy, with uncontrolled high blood pressure, hernia, or recent abdominal or spinal surgery. Learn this one directly from a qualified teacher, not from a description — release immediately if pain, breathlessness, or dizziness appears.
What About Prithvi, Vayu, Surya & the Full "Element" System?

Still left out deliberately. The complete Pancha Tattva ("five element") mudra system — one finger-pairing per element, each mapped to a specific ailment — goes further than the five practical mudras just above: it claims a precise mechanism (an "element" of the body) for every single complaint, which is a stronger claim than any made here. Its popularity is real; its documented origin still traces mainly to 20th-century Indian mudra-therapy movements, not classical Hatha texts, and its specific cures aren't clinically substantiated.

That doesn't make any of these mudras false, or not worth trying — only that each one on this page is labeled for exactly what it is, with nothing dressed up as more than it's shown to be.

A Gesture, Not a Guarantee

None of these fourteen need to be believed in to be worth doing. Anjali and Dhyana have simply outlasted every fashion in meditation for a thousand years; Vishnu and Shanmukhi work because of plain mechanics, not mystery; Gyan sits honestly in between; the five practical ones carry exactly the lineage they've earned — no more, no less; and the four classical closing mudras are given their due weight, caution included. That's a stronger foundation than a promise — fourteen gestures, each labeled truthfully, worth keeping on those terms.

"Classical" here means textually documented in named historical sources; it is not a claim that every traditional benefit has been clinically validated. Educational and general in nature, not medical advice.
