What the Vedic and Hindu texts say, and what modern medicine finds

Home · होम
The short answer

The Vedic and Ayurvedic texts give no fixed number of hours. They teach balance (yukta), an early night and a pre-dawn rise. Modern guidance for adults over 55 lands in a similar place.

1What the texts say

Bhagavad Gita 6.16–17

Yoga is not for one who sleeps too much, nor for one who stays awake too much. For one who is regulated (yukta) in food, recreation, effort, and in sleep and waking, yoga ends sorrow. The verse asks for regulation. It names no number.

Charaka Samhita, Sutrasthana 21 (verse 36 in common editions)

Happiness and sorrow, nourishment and wasting, strength and weakness, vitality and its loss, knowledge and ignorance, even life itself: all rest on sleep. The next verse warns that sleep taken at the wrong time, in excess, or not at all takes away happiness and life. Elsewhere (Sutrasthana 11) Charaka names sleep as one of three supports of life, with food and regulated living.

Ashtanga Hridayam, Sutrasthana 2.1 · Manusmriti 4.92

A healthy person should rise in the Brahma muhurta, the pre-dawn period, commonly taken as about an hour and a half before sunrise, to protect life and health. Manu says the same of waking in that hour. This fixes the end of the night, not its length. Going to bed early enough is how the tradition makes the arithmetic work.

Age and Vata. Ayurveda assigns Vata to the last part of life, the last part of the night and the last part of digestion. This is why older people wake early and sleep lighter, and the texts list aggravated Vata among causes of disturbed sleep (nidranasha). The remedy is routine, warmth, a light early dinner and oil massage, not forcing longer hours.

Daytime sleep. Charaka discourages it in general but permits it for certain people, among them the elderly, children, the weak and the exhausted (Sutrasthana 21, verses 39–41 in common editions).

Rig Veda 10.127 · Yoga Sutra 1.10

The Ratri Sukta (Rig Veda 10.127) addresses Night as a protective presence under which living beings come to rest. Patanjali (Yoga Sutra 1.10) counts nidra among the five mental modes, a state to be understood and not merely scheduled. Neither text gives hours.

No verse gives a number of hours for any age. The figure of "6 to 8 hours" often quoted as Vedic comes from later practice and modern guidance. The popular clock mapping (Pitta hours from 10 pm to 2 am) is a later teaching built on the verse about the divisions of the night. Edition numbering of verses also differs, so check your own edition before quoting a number.

National Sleep Foundation ranges

An expert panel reviewing more than 300 studies set 7–9 hours for adults aged 26–64 and 7–8 hours for those 65 and over. For 65 and over it lists 5–6 hours and 9 hours as "may be appropriate" for some individuals. In June 2026 the Foundation published a ten-year review of 133 meta-analyses and reaffirmed these ranges.

Meta-analysis

Both too little and too much are linked to higher mortality

A meta-analysis of 79 cohort studies found that sleeping under 7 hours was linked to 14 percent higher all-cause mortality and sleeping 9 hours or more to 34 percent higher. The relationship is U-shaped, with the lowest risk around 7–8 hours.

Older adults · mixed evidence

In people over 60 the picture is less tidy60

A meta-analysis of 28 studies and 95,259 older people found long sleep clearly tied to mortality, especially in women, and short sleep tied to it in men only. A large US sample found the U-shape only in the elderly, and its authors judged long sleep more likely a result of illness and age-related sleep change than a cause of death. One analysis found no link at all after age 65. Among people 80 and over, risk was lowest at about 8 hours.

Review

How sleep itself changes with age

With age, sleep becomes lighter and more fragmented, with more awakenings and less deep sleep. The body clock tends to shift earlier (a phase advance), so people feel sleepy early in the evening and wake early. Melatonin falls. Even so, a national survey found older adults report about 7 hours on average, and much of the poor sleep in later life traces to illness, medicines and sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, not to ageing alone. The belief that older people simply need less sleep is a misconception.

Cohort studies

Naps: short is fine, very long is a warning sign

In 2,751 older men followed for 12 years, those napping 120 minutes or more a day were 66 percent more likely to develop cognitive impairment than those napping under 30 minutes. A Chinese cohort of adults over 60 found naps under 30 minutes linked to lower risk of cognitive decline. Napping may be a marker of early decline as much as a cause, so a sudden rise in napping deserves a doctor's attention.

Cohort study

Regular timing may matter even more than hours

In 60,977 UK Biobank participants (average age about 63) wearing activity trackers, the most regular sleepers had 20 to 48 percent lower all-cause mortality than the least regular. Sleep regularity predicted mortality better than sleep duration did. The most regular sleepers typically fell asleep and woke within roughly one-hour windows. The study is observational, so it cannot prove that regularity causes longer life, and short or very long sleep still carried higher risk.

A sensible pattern

Hours: aim for 7–8 hours of actual sleep. Because sleep efficiency falls with age, time in bed is usually a little longer.

Clock: a bedtime around 9:30 to 10:30 pm and the same wake time every day, weekends included. Brahma muhurta is a fine target if it leaves you the full 7 hours. Do not force a 4 am rise on an 11 pm bedtime.

Nap: 20 to 30 minutes, early afternoon.

Morning light: a few minutes of sunlight on waking helps set the body clock, which weakens with age.

Evening: a light early dinner and a wind-down are traditional advice. A short Yoga Nidra or slow breathing before bed fits both worlds; see our Yoga Nidra page.
